SIDE EVENT ENTITLED “THE IMPACT OF THE ARAL SEA IN TURKMENISTAN” WAS HELD WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE 79TH SESSION OF THE UNESCAP

On 18 May 2023 in Bangkok, in the framework of the 79th session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP),  a side event was held entitled "Impact of the Aral Sea in Turkmenistan". The Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCAP Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Representatives of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to ESCAP, as well as heads of departments and representatives of this Commission took part in the event.

During the event, a presentation was made by the delegation of Turkmenistan on the Aral Sea problems and the specific work carried out in Turkmenistan at national level to mitigate the consequences of the Aral Sea crisis, as well as within the framework of the Programme of action for Assistance to the Aral Sea States.

The event was aimed at raising awareness about the consequences of the Aral Sea catastrophe.
