MEETINGS OF THE DELEGATION OF TURKMENISTAN WITH THE HEADS OF INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS IN GENEVA

On October 8, 2019, as part of the participation in the 70th session of the Executive Committee of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Program, at the IOM headquarters, a meeting of the delegation of Turkmenistan headed by the Deputy Chairman of the State Migration Service was held with Mr. Antonio Vitorino, the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

During the meeting, the parties noted the great positive experience of cooperation between Turkmenistan and IOM. It was especially noted that Turkmenistan considers issues of migration, asylum, ensuring the rights of refugees and stateless persons as key vectors of cooperation with authoritative organizations.

In this context, Turkmenistan’s firm commitment to its obligations in addressing issues related to migrants, refugees and stateless persons, both at the national and international levels, was emphasized.

On October 9, 2019, a meeting of the delegation of Turkmenistan with Mr. Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees was held at the UN Office in Geneva.

During the meeting, a high level of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UNHCR was noted with satisfaction. In this context, the High Commissioner expressed appreciation to Turkmenistan for the work done to reduce stateless persons, while noting that the experience of Turkmenistan is a good example for other states. The High Commissioner also noted that the recent decision of the President of Turkmenistan to grant citizenship of Turkmenistan to a group of 863 people is an important milestone and deserves international recognition.
