Meeting with the IOM Regional Coordinator for Central Asia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan

On 10 December 2024, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan between the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Myahri Byashimova and the newly appointed Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Kazakhstan, Coordinator for Central Asia Serhan Aktoprak.

The Turkmen side congratulated the guest on his appointment to the new position and expressed hope for continuation of constructive partnership.

During the meeting, the parties exchanged views on current issues of Turkmenistan’s collaboration with IOM and outlined joint tasks for future.

They emphasized that Turkmenistan considers the issues of ensuring the rights of refugees and stateless persons, as well as combating human trafficking as priority areas of partnership with reputable international organizations.

In this context, due to consistent and systematic work, Turkmenistan has demonstrated international leadership by becoming the first State that is Party to the Conventions on Statelessness to resolve all known cases of statelessness, as well as the first country in Central Asia to join the Global Alliance to End Statelessness.

The interlocutors noted with satisfaction the successful implementation of the “Plan of projects to be implemented by the Government of Turkmenistan together with the Representative Office of the International Organization for Migration in Turkmenistan in 2024”, and also defined areas of cooperation for 2025.

At the end of the meeting, the interlocutors expressed mutual interest in further development of cooperation.
