High-level bilateral talks between the President of Turkmenistan and the Prime Minister of Japan were held in Tokyo

On April 15, 2025, high-level bilateral talks were held between President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Prime Minister of Japan Shigeru Ishiba.
Having warmly welcomed the head of Turkmenistan and members of the official delegation of our country, the head of the Government of the friendly state noted that this is President Serdar Berdimuhamedov's first visit to Japan, and thanked the distinguished guest for accepting the invitation to visit the country.
Congratulating the head of state on the successful National Day of Turkmenistan at the World Expo 2025, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba noted the high level of organization of events on the occasion of this event.
The Prime Minister noted that Japan highly appreciates Turkmenistan's initiatives aimed at ensuring peace and sustainable development in the region and on the planet, as well as the neutral legal status of our country, three times enshrined in the Resolutions of the UN General Assembly.
Having thanked Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on his own behalf, as well as on behalf of the delegation of Turkmenistan for the warm welcome and hospitality, the head of state conveyed sincere words of greeting and best wishes from the National Leader of the Turkmen people.
Taking this opportunity, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov congratulated the head of the Japanese Government on the grand opening of EXPO 2025 in Osaka, noting that the World Expo is a shining symbol of innovation, cultural exchange and cooperation at the global level.
The negotiations held at the highest level give a powerful impetus to the interaction of the two countries, the head of state said, emphasizing that today's meeting will provide a good opportunity to discuss priority vectors of cooperation between our states, and once again thanked for the warm welcome and hospitality.
As noted, Turkmenistan and Japan successfully interact in all key areas. An active political dialogue is being carried out between the two countries, trade and economic ties are developing dynamically, and cooperation in the cultural and humanitarian sphere continues. Particular attention is paid to strengthening inter-parliamentary contacts.
Our countries actively interact not only in a bilateral format, but also within the framework of international structures, in particular, the United Nations. This is confirmed by the mutual support of initiatives and proposals aimed at ensuring peace, stability and sustainable development at the global level.
The Turkmen-Japanese partnership is also successfully developing in a multilateral format, including within the framework of the Central Asia + Japan Dialogue, which is an effective form of multilateral interaction.
Continuing, the head of state, noting the high level of bilateral relations, focused on its main areas.
The first is interaction in the political and diplomatic sphere, said the President of Turkmenistan, emphasizing that our country attaches particular importance to the further development of the Turkmen-Japanese political dialogue.
The second is the expansion of trade and economic contacts. To date, a number of large projects with the participation of Japanese companies have been implemented in Turkmenistan.
The head of state named cooperation in the cultural and humanitarian sphere as the third vector.
As noted, various cultural events organized by the Embassy of Japan in our country are regularly held in Turkmenistan - Days of Japanese Cinema, a presentation of ikebana, a demonstration of Japanese cuisine.
In 2024, a monument to the Japanese writer Yasunari Kawabata was erected in the Magtymguly Pyragy cultural and park complex in Ashgabat.
Direct contacts have been established between higher education institutions of the two countries. In Turkmenistan, great importance is attached to the study of the Japanese language, said President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, continuing that today Japanese is taught in a number of universities and schools in our country.
One of the main areas of bilateral cooperation is inter-parliamentary relations.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's permanent neutrality, and the main event of the year will be the International Forum, which is planned to be held on December 12 in Ashgabat, said President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and, taking the opportunity, invited Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to take part in the work of the Forum.
In conclusion, the head of state once again emphasized that Turkmenistan attaches great importance to further strengthening cooperation with Japan.
